Self-test for the detection of group A ß-haemolytic Streptococcus in throat swab

Group A ß-haemolytic Streptococcus (also known as Streptococcus pyogenes) infection of the throat is one of the most common bacterial causes of acute pharyngitis and is also responsible for some skin infections such as impetigo and erysipelas. Most sore throats are caused by viral infections which clear up on their own without antibiotic treatment, which would be useless. While Strep A throat infections sometimes can go away within a few days without treatment, physicians prescribe antibiotics to prevent related complications that can be serious, such as rheumatic fever or acute glomerulonephritis.

STREP A TEST can be carried out if there are symptoms such as pain when swallowing, sore throat, red and swollen tonsils, small red patches on the back of the palate, swollen lymph nodes, fever, headache, nausea or vomiting, especially in children.

Collect the pharyngeal sample by using the provided material.
Put the swab into the plastic tube and add the two diluent solutions.
Mix the solutions and let the swab into the tube for 2-5 minutes. Remove it and collect as much liquid as possible.
Apply the dropper to the tube and add 1 drop into the sample well. Wait 5 minutes before reading the result.

What happens if the results reading time is not met? The test has been carried out correctly when the instructions for use are followed. It includes the reading time and the interpretation of the results shown at the "RESULTS INTERPRETATION" section of the instructions for use.

How to prove that the test worked correctly? A coloured line will appear at the control region (C) on the test device, showing that the test performed correctly. The absence of the coloured line suggests to repeat the test with a new device and a new sample.

How to interpret the test if the control and test lines have different intensities? The colour and intensity of the lines do not affect the interpretation of the result. The test has to be considered positive regardless of the colour intensity of the test line (T).

Provided that your strep A rapid test result is positive, it is necessary to take measures to soothe the symptoms and reduce the spread of the bacteria. Although in some cases the infection goes away by itself, it is crucial not to underestimate it.

-Follow medical advice. Although in certain cases strep A disappears without antibiotic treatment, a specialist should always present appropriate treatment options.
Soothe the pain. Apart from taking medications, you may use natural treatment methods, such as eating foods rich in vitamin C or drinking apple vinegar to soothe sore throat symptoms.
-Stay hydrated and rest. Drinking proper amounts of fluids can help alleviate symptoms and prevent dehydration.
-Reduce the spread. As strep A is highly contagious, it is recommended to take preventive measures that will limit the potential spread of the bacteria, for example washing hands frequently.
